The next day, John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him. John said to the people, “Look! This is the Lamb of God. He will take away the sin of the world.”

John explained, “This is the person I was talking about before. I said someone greater than me was coming. He is greater because he existed before me. At first, I did not know that he was the Messiah (the special chosen one). But I have been baptizing people with water so that he would be made known to the people of Israel.”

Then John shared what he saw. He said, “I saw the Spirit of God come down from heaven like a dove and rest on him. Before this, I did not know who he was. But God told me, ‘The person you see the Spirit come down and stay on is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’”

John said, “I saw this happen to Jesus. So now I tell you that he is the Chosen One of God.”
