A king wanted to check how much money his servants owed him.

One servant owed the king a very large amount of money. He could not pay it back. The king ordered that the servant and his family be sold to pay the debt.

The servant fell to the ground and begged, “Please be patient with me. I will pay you back.”

The king decided to be kind to him. He forgave the debt and let the servant go free.

Later, the same servant met another servant who owed him a small amount of money. He grabbed him and said, “Pay me what you owe!”

The second servant fell down and begged, “Please be patient with me. I will pay you back.”

But the first servant refused. He had the man put into prison until the money was paid.

Other servants saw what happened and felt very upset. They went and told the king everything.

The king called the servant back and said, “I forgave your big debt because you asked me. You should have shown kindness to the other servant too.”

Because of this, the king punished the servant for being unkind.
