During the 18th century, some parts of Europe banned public displays of Christianity. But one candy maker wanted to share the love of Jesus and the true story of Christmas in a simple way. He created a special J-shaped candy — the candy cane.
The candy cane is shaped like a shepherd’s staff, reminding us that Jesus is the shepherd who cares for and guides his people. When turned upside down, it forms the letter “J,” standing for Jesus.
The candy cane is hard, symbolizing that Jesus is our rock—strong and dependable. The wide red stripes represent his sacrifice and the blood he shed, while the white stripes stand for purity and holiness. Green sometimes appears on the candy cane, showing new life and growth in those who trust in him.
When the candy cane is broken, it reminds us that Jesus died on the cross. And because it is made to be shared, it also represents the love of Jesus, who gave the greatest gift of all—salvation.
“…You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
“For God so loved the world that he gave Jesus, that whoever believes in Jesus shall not perish but have eternal life.”
