A large crowd followed the teacher, Jesus, because they saw him make sick people well.
Jesus went up a hill and sat with his disciples. He looked up and saw the big crowd coming. He asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough bread for all these people?” Jesus already knew what he would do, but he wanted to hear Philip’s answer.
Philip said, “Even 200 silver coins would not be enough. Each person would only get a small piece.”
Then Andrew, another disciple, said, “Here is a boy with five small loaves of bread and two fish. But that is not enough for so many people.”
Jesus said, “Tell the people to sit down.” There was plenty of grass, so they sat down. About 5,000 men were in the crowd.
Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, and shared it with the people. Everyone ate as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
After they finished, Jesus said, “Do not waste anything. Pick up what is left.” The disciples filled 12 baskets with leftover bread.
The people saw this miracle and said, “Surely this man is very special.”
