Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Hindus all over the world.  It is a festival associated with lights because it celebrates the victory of good over evil.  A few weeks before the festival, the Hindus paint, clean and decorate their houses.  The children go shopping with their parents, buying new clothes and shoes.  The housewives make different types of sweets and Indian cakes.  Everyone eagerly awaits a great day.

On Deepavali day, the Hindus get up early and have an oil bath before changing into new clothes.  Then, they go to the temple for their early morning prayers.  A wide variety of delicious food is served to welcome the stream of visitors.  The children are the happiest because they are free to enjoy themselves.  Most of them get their share of pocket money to buy things they like.

Questions for discussion:

  1. Volunteer to show pictures related to Deepavali – clothes, oil lamps decorating houses, food served, etc.
  2. Volunteer asks student to share about their favourite festival and why they like it.
