During the 18th century, certain areas of Europe imposed a ban on public displays of Christianity. But, a candy maker made a special J-shape candy to share the love of Jesus and the real story of Christmas with the world.

The candy cane in the shape of a shepherd’s staff. Jesus is the shepherd to his followers. The “sheep” would hear His voice and follow him. When it is held upside down, it forms a “J,” which stands for Jesus.

The candy cane is hard. This is to remind us that Jesus is our “rock,” dependable and strong.

Wide red stripes are added to the candy cane, representative of the crucifixion and the blood Jesus shed for our sins.  There are also white stripes on the candy cane, representing the holiness, and purity of Jesus, who was sinless.

The green that appears on the candy cane means new growth in the life of a person who trusts in Jesus.

When the candy cane is eaten, it is often broken, which the candy maker meant as a reminder that when Jesus was crucified, his body was broken.

The candy cane is also made to be given as a gift, representing the love of Jesus when he gave us the gift of salvation.

“…You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins”

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
